Fusitu’a has been a major proponent of making Bitcoin legal tender in Tonga for quite a while, and his knowledge of crypto is now paying off for the whole country.

BTC donated to this address doesn’t need to go through banks or be deluded by transfer fees - this makes crypto faster and more efficient than usual aid donation systems.

I just minted my very first NFT. No screenshots allowed or I’ll call the cyber police!

I don’t plan on it selling, but if it does, the proceeds will go to the Elephant Valley Project.

I spent all week trying to decide what image I should use, and after fretting about it all day, I looked back through my old pictures, and realized there couldn’t be a more perfect start. My very first foray into digital art.

I mainly minted it as a birthday present to myself, but hopefully this is the first of many! I believe NFTs, as cringey as they are currently, could be the next big way of decentralized charity funding.

This was a really special morning. I could tell she was finally beginning to trust me and respond to the new method after being understandably hesitant to let anything near her incredibly sore and sensitive feet.

Typically, rice is grown in flat, lowland paddies. This is why most historical kingdoms in South and SE Asia began in valleys.

Many highland cultures started as lowland cultures, but migrated into the hills to escape the taxes, conscription, and forced labor of the valley kingdoms.

But without the flat plains to grow their food, highland people either learned how to cultivate a separate species of mountain rice that doesn’t require a paddy (like the Hmong and Bunong peoples) or terraform their surroundings into hill-paddies like the Tamang

So in conclusion hill tribe men and women have like the biggest calves you’ve ever seen like seriously. The more you know 💫

On Easter three years ago, the families of my maho

On Easter three years ago, the families of my mahout friends visited to perform a traditional Karen elephant spirit ceremony.

Afterwards, I asked if they’d be heading back home and one of the older guys told me “We’re going to church, it’s Easter!”

The Karen have traditionally been animists. Missionaries arrived in SE Asia during colonial times and - after failing to convert any significant number of the Buddhist general population - they turned to the ethnic minorities. Christianity took hold in many highland communities and a very cool mix of animist-Christianity is practiced by many hill tribes like the Karen today.

Unfortunately, this also makes these minority groups even more of a target for the nominally Buddhist majority government.

The families of these mahouts fled Myanmar decades ago to find refuge in Thailand. Now, on Easter 2021, thousands more Karen are desperately trying to escape a country controlled by a regime that wants nothing less than their complete annihilation.

The Free Burma Rangers @freeburmarangers have been working with IDPs in Burma for decades and are on the frontline providing medical care and coordinating mass evacuations from communities at risk from air strikes.

Myanmar (Burma) has made international news due to the recent coup committed by the military junta. Videos of Burmese soldiers killing protesting citizens have shocked the world.

But what most people don’t know is that the Burmese government has been actively attempting to genocide millions of Myanmar’s ethnic minorities for over 60 years.

Attacks on minority communities have been steadily ramping up over the past year, but now have a new ferocity after the coup.

The Free Burma Rangers have been providing aid to communities and refugees within Burma for over a decade - as well as documenting the increasing violence.

The most well-known lunar calendar is obviously the Chinese Zodiac, but the lunar new year is celebrated by many different people groups in many different regions.

For Tibetan and Tibetic people like the Tamang, the lunar new year is known as Losar. It is celebrated over multiple days with ceremonies, songs, dances, and delicious communal feasts.

For all people, the new year brings hopes for a better future. In occupied Tibet, it is a time to pray for freedom.

For real though, I’m so thankful to have been invited down here to help - and by help I mean ask the local staff “ok now what?” and “Como se chama isso?” every ten seconds.

Everyone has been incredibly kind to me. I’ve made so many new footed, hoofed, taloned, and pawed friends (Brazilians have a real nuclear waste problem)

Today is the birthday of American abolitionist, activist, and anarchist, Lysander Spooner - author of “The Unconstitutionality of Slavery”

So today’s wall of text that no one asked for and no one is going to read is called “Why Anarchy?”

This might be a controversial post (not that there’s anybody conversing about my posts) but Spooner’s work is a big part of why I call myself an anarchist and why I’m starting this project.

Contrary to popular belief, real anarchy is not about rioting in the streets, storming the capitol, or wearing edgy black clothes (though I do anyway). For myself and people like Lysander Spooner, anarchy is the freedom for normal people to live the lives they want to live without being oppressed.

Because anarchy has been co-opted by far right and far left edge-lords who want an excuse to burn cars, I would most associate myself with the term Voluntaryist - because I, like Spooner, would like to live in a voluntary society.

A society where no one is coerced into doing anything against their will; where all interactions between humans are voluntary, require consent, and do not require violence.

I won the privilege lottery, I was born a suburban white male in the US of frickin’ A. I can travel to literally anywhere in the world. But obviously I didn’t choose where I was born which means I also didn’t consent to be governed by the people in power here.

This sounds ridiculous coming from a white American, but I’ve learned that if you are one of the hundreds of millions of other humans who happened to be born in a country where your ethnicity is viewed as inferior, and your freedoms are restricted because of this, you usually view your government a little differently.

This is what made me an anarchist. I have been incredibly lucky to work with multiple minority communities across Asia. All these people want is the freedom to live their lives, yet throughout their history, they have been persecuted relentlessly, usually by governments or with government consent.
